What is Acupuncture?

Life means energy, and energy means life. When energy is missing in your life, you’re missing out on an essential part of your wellbeing – mentally and physically. Acupuncture is an incredible way to release dense and negative energy from the body and allow positive energy to flow freely.

Acupuncture is a 5,000-year-old practice, based on ancient traditional Chinese medicine lifeforce concepts. When they are out of balance, the body can experience pain, lack of function or illness. Acupuncture can restore that balance and allow your body to heal itself naturally.

The Discovery Process

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) examines your energy, or qi (chee), as it travels through the pathways (meridians) of your body. The four main methods used are: inspection, auscultation and olfaction (listening and smelling), inquiring and palpation (touching). If this energy is blocked as it flows along these meridians, the disruption can cause a backup of harmful, negative energy. The main factor in causing blockages is stress. Stress influences the majority of the pain in our bodies. Chronic stress is like a corrosive poison to the body. Stress levels, for many people, are off the charts. With demands for attention coming from all angles, stress can overcome the nervous system’s ability adapt to various traumas and pain. The body will then experience a breakdown, which can cause various ailments including depression, anxiety, inflammation, insomnia, back ache, neck pain, digestive problems and more.

In our practice, we use the AcuGraph, an advanced electrodiagnostic imaging system from Japan, to measure the actual energy in your body’s connective tissue. The AcuGraph allows Dr. Lyon to map the body’s energy system and target the specific areas which need healing. Using a tiny electrical current, the AcuGraph is a safe method to get an accurate, precise measurement of your energy flow. Your P.I.E. (Personal Integrated Energetics) score is calculated based on The AcuGraph readings. Energy levels are represented by different colors with green representing balance and proper function. A healthy energy system has a 100% score; anything less than that represents an imbalance which should be further explored.

At Dr Matt Lyon, we take a holistic approach to treating your pain. Our goal is to restore the natural flow of your bio-energetic field and nervous system using acupuncture. In this state of flow, you are self-healing. Your body knows just how to reorganize cells and regulate your genetic capacity for health, vitality, and regeneration. With a Master’s Degree in Acupuncture and over 3,000 hours of training, Dr. Lyon is able to balance the use of modern technique with the deep traditions of centuries-old Traditional Chinese Medicine for the best results. Acupuncture involves inserting very thin needles through the skin in specific areas (meridian points) of the body to stimulate function and release blocked energy. It some cases, micro currents are used for additional stimulation, particularly in deep tissue therapy. When the energy is released, your body’s natural healing ability targets the affected systems to reverse the damage. In modern acupuncture, needles are not always necessary. We can also use powerful lasers to heal the body. Most lasers used in acupuncture are called cold lasers as they don’t produce heat. These lasers can help regenerate cells, decrease pain, reduce inflammation, improve circulation and much more. Studies show laser acupuncture, similar to needle acupuncture, not only has localized effects but also in the brain, positively affecting the entire body. Additional benefits of laser acupuncture include:

  • Gentle, painless, non-invasive
  • Suitable for weak or elderly patients and children
  • Shorter treatment time
  • Heals soft tissue damage faster
  • Can treat conditions needle acupuncture can’t, i.e. burns, cysts, and epidermal inflammation

Modern science has developed some amazing tools to allow us to balance the whole energy system painlessly. Research has shown acupuncture has positive effects on the nervous, endocrine, immune, cardiovascular and digestive systems. Acupuncture may improve these conditions:

  • Lower back pain or sciatica
  • Neck pain, headaches and migraines
  • TMJ
  • Constant injury to knees and shoulders

  • Allergies and indigestion
  • Depression
  • Thyroid, hormone and fertility issues
  • “Tired but wired” feeling
